Mission Statement for 2007-2008

Eventworks is traditionally an annual festival which brings innovation and creativity to the Mass Art community. Eventworks was established as part of the (SIM) department in order for students to be able have real-life experience producing events and working with professional artists and peers to create a bridge between Mass Art and the outside international and local communities of artists. Our vision for the year has come forth through a process of teamwork and compromise in order to successfully meld each individual concept and vision of what events should be produced. We came to art school to learn about art, and improve our art. However, as we focus closer and closer on our art and our processes, we sometimes loose our groundings. When we create a piece of art, we are using languages and systems, both physical and mental, that are or have been based in fields that are easily and often considered detached, removed, or somehow separated from our own concentration. When you look at a tree without considering the roots, you are not truly seeing the tree. Similarly, we feel that when we look at our art without considering the roots of language, science, culture, ect. We are not seeing our artwork in its true context. Our goal is to objectively consider the inherent connections therein. We feel that to better our understanding of the aforementioned languages that we use to create our art is to better our understanding of our art in the context of those languages: culture, science, philosophy, politics, ect. This year’s Eventwork’s team hopes to address these topics and others through the facilitation of events, lectures, forums, and of course, art.
